The Automobile Committee discussed banning the importation of used cars more than 5 years old. In the meeting chaired by Yusuf ibn Ahmed Al-Dowsari perspectives on this matter were discussed and it some suggested that cars older than eight years not be allowed at all while strictly enforcing specifications and standards for automobiles driven in Saudi Arabia.
The members recognized that this decision is in the interests of the country and the citizenry and not soley for the benefit of special interests because old cars negatively affect the environment.
Members of the Committee began organizing a conference for the auto sector by establishing a work group for that purpose. Some speakers and topics of discussion for the conference were proposed, and some members were keen to invite the General Director of Customs for Saudi Arabia.
The Committee also discussed building a showroom for auto auctions to help organize the sale and purchase of used cars instead of random auctions like those in Riyadh.
